Hidden in the deepest roots of the mountains the Balrog remained for almost two ages of Middle-earth, until the delvings of the dwarves of Moria penetrated his caverns. The Balrog awoke and destroyed Moria, and killed or scattered it’s inhabitants. When the Fellowship passed through Moria, the Balrog was once again disturbed and became locked in a terrible struggle to the death with Gandalf the grey on the bridge of Kazad-dum.
